Playing it safe

I should probably be a bit more cautious about what I write here. Nothing definite yet, but it would be a good idea to keep in mind in general.

When I got my job deep in a regulatory department of the U.S. federal government, one of my soon-to-be co-workers described the position as "way down the totem pole" in terms of importance. (Actually, I think his exact phrase was "low down the totem pole", but that name was taken, I think calling this "down the totem pole" would have sounded bad, and who cares about the exact words of an off-the-cuff remark from more than two years ago?) This is the government from the perspective of... not an insider, really, but maybe someone below the walls, stuck in a drainage ditch and not quite certain that I'm supposed to be there.
